I watched
300: Rise of An Empire yesterday.
Personally, I think the movie was really good. Obviously, not as good as the first but the mix of gore and chaos was quite well balanced (at least for a movie made for the general public). Only issue I had was that many of the fighting sequences were a little sloppy. In most cases, a lot of the stunt performers who portrayed the Persians were either bad in collapsing the right way after being hacked or (in one such instance) refused to fall at all. Also, a lot of the graphics did not stay true to the air of war. I remember one battle scene that takes place at sea, where an entire ship full of Athenians was blown to smithereens, but the water shot had a whole lot more ship debris than human bodies.
So the graphics and choreography centered around the fighting was not all that great. But the movie had a solid plot and the back story leading to the events after Leonidas' defeat was worth the 1 hour and 45 minute sit-down. I think the screenwriters did well in depicting what war really brings to the table for all the countries involved. There is the usual hacking of soldiers, but there is also at least one scene where women are raped and killed and one scene illustrating child abuse. So this movie dives more into the psychology of war victims and military leaders.
That said, this movie might offend some people (more specifically, Persians and women, which is interesting considering that the general of the Persian army is a chick). So if you intend to watch 300:Rise of an Empire, do not bring your kids (one lady actually brought her kids to watch this movie and quickly regretted it when Eva Green's tits filled the screen) and prepare yourself for aspects of life that American theater tries its best to show very little (if any) of.
