Angry Birds Movie: Blockbuster or Bust?

This is a big deal for movie-goers and game enthusiasts everywhere.
A few days ago, Sony Pictures Entertainment released the official theatrical trailer for The Angry Birds Movie on its Youtube channel.

In the trailer, we are given more details about the movie. Based on the trailer, we follow an easily irate bird named Red as he and his friends attempt to protect their community from a swarm of pig invaders.

This film may be the next blockbuster, but not entirely because of the cast. The cast of The Angry Birds Movie (TABM for short) consists of some very well-known names. Red is voiced by Jason Sudeikis (played Kurt Buckman in Horrible Bosses and Horrible Bosses 2). Mighty Eagle is voiced by Peter Dinklage (played Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones and Eddie in Pixels). Then there is Danny McBride who does the voice of Bomb. You all probably know him from Pineapple Express (where he played Red) and This Is The End (where he played a more exaggerated version of himself). These are only a few names. You can find the entire cast list on The Angry Birds Movie IMDb page.

As far as I know, The Angry Birds Movie may well be the first movie based on a mobile game. This is a big deal for our mobile-driven generation. However, such an accomplishment does not come risk-free. Super Mario Bros. made history as the first movie based on the popular video game by Nintendo. It did not fare well in theaters. It netted close to $21 million in box office sales, which was roughly half of the movie's budget. The production cost was $48 million. More information related to the movie can be found on the Super Mario Bros.Wiki page. It also consisted of a well-known cast of actors, more specifically Bob Hoskins (best-known for playing detective Edward Valiant from Who Framed Roger Rabbit) and John Leguizamo (best known for voicing  Sid in all the Ice Age movies).

So what will be the "make or break" factor for TABM? Already, some critics have voiced concerns over some of the crude humor (more specifically, the pee joke). However, I feel the humor will do little to diminish the value of the movie. Does anyone remember the South Park movie, South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut? It was littered with crude humor but it excelled in the box office, netting nearly four times the cost of the movie. It had a very strong fan base much like TABM  and, in my opinion, a good plot line and a believable cast of characters.

The success of the South Park movie leads me to believe that TABM has a shot at something great. It has the cast, the fan base and the credentials. By May 20th 2016, we'll see if it has the plot line and characters to win movie-goers and a place on the right side of history.
