We do what we must to make a better life for our children.
When an immigrant named Dheepan flees with his family to escape persecution, he arrives at a French town plagued with problems. Now he must find a way to cope with the violence, discrimination and corruption that rocks his neighborhood, while trying to make a better life for himself, his wife and his daughter.
The trailer released by StudioCanalUK reveals the level of hardship and abuse that many immigrants endure to make a better life for themselves and their families. These immigrants are not dangerous immigrants. These immigrants are not a disease on society. They work hard to improve the quality of the society they reside in. However, it has become easier to ignore the positive contributions immigrants make in society everyday. That is because these positive contributions are only noticed by the community they reside in. This community makes up a small portion of the country they live in. The rest of the country is almost completely unaware of these contributions. A majority of citizens are only aware of the few immigrants who possess family members that use their names, status and credibility to hide ill-intentions. Ill-intentions that too frequently result in the loss of immigrant/citizen life.
It is a tribute to hardworking, immigrant families (past and present) when a movie is made that depicts immigrants in a different, more positive light. It shows that someone out there understands and honors the good work that immigrants do, in order to better their communities. Dheepan speaks for all immigrants who must wake up every morning to go to work. It celebrates all immigrants who go beyond their responsibilities to suggest and provide better services to their communities, as well as the country they live in.
