It is one thing to pursue your dreams without the support of family. It is another thing to pursue your dreams with the opposition of an entire government.
Eddie the Eagle is 20th Century Fox's newest, inspirational sports movie. It is based on a true story about a young, British lad named Eddie Edwards who, after being shielded from participating in any sports for much of his childhood, decides to pursue a career in Olympic ski jumping. If some of you have never seen a ski jump in action, watch the short clip below:
World's Longest Ski Jump 246m
Absolutely terrifying, right? No parachute. No protective net. It makes little difference that the landing pad is coated in snow or that the jumper is wearing a helmet. One jerk of the leg is all it takes to turn this event into a tragedy. It is a wonder how Mr. Edwards chose ski jumping as the sport to pursue at the Olympic level.
As if the stakes are not high enough, the character does it without the backing of his own government at one point--well, the British Olympic Association. In all fairness, if an association that is meant to represent your country is not willing to speak for your credentials as an athlete, it is as good as losing an endorsement from the government itself. So the odds are quite high against Mr. Edwards, It will be interesting to see how he overcomes this uphill battle.
Eddie The Eagle is meant to hit British theaters on February 26th 2016. It looks promising based on its plot line, as well as its great acting cast that includes Hugh Jackman (best known for his performances in Australia as Drover and X-Men as Wolverine) and Taron Egerton (best known for his performance in Kingsman: The Secret Service as Gary Unwin).
Just a thought. It would be awesome if one of the cast members from Cool Runnings made a brief cameo in this movie. They both participated in the same 1988 Winter Olympics, though in separate events. The bobsled team could cheer for Eddie in the comfort of their hotels. Call it wishful thinking. Oh well. A man can dream. Enjoy the trailer. :)
