What does your pet do when you're away?
The trailer for The Secret Life Of Pets was recently released on You Tube. It left a very favorable impression on me after I watched it a couple of times. Why? Art design, animation and cast selection.
I love the art design and animation. The scenery and the characters mimic the busy and energetic nature of the city. All the non-human character motions are very lively and the colors are eye-popping. The Illumination team does a fantastic job in syncing the character designs with the scenery. At no time do I feel like the characters are out of place. In addition, the art style is a near replica of the art style for Despicable Me, which I most admire for its non-offensive exaggeration of certain human features.
Also, I love the cast selection. The cast consists of some very well-known comedians/actors--Eric Stonestreet, Louis C.K, Jenny Slate, Hannibal Duress and Kevin Hart.
Two particular members of the cast pique my interest. Until I saw the trailer, I did not think Louis C.K. could play a character as positive and enthusiastic as Max. If you watch any of his comedies, "enthusiastic" and "positive" are not the first words that come to mind. "Funny", sure. "Painfully honest", definitely. "Controversial", yeah. Not enthusiastic and positive. He may be enthusiastic and positive at home, but not on stage. So the choice to cast him as the voice actor for Max is a surprise to me. Based on the trailer, I am impressed with his voice acting. It reveals a side that I have never seen before.
It is quite possible that we will see a more "Louis C.K"-like Max as the character's situation worsens. We do see a hint of it when Max is in the dog-catcher's van. Just do not expect any "F-bombs".
Then there is Kevin Hart who plays Snowball. I have not watched the movie yet and I am already in love with this little soft, furry villain. You see the energy and the goofiness that Kevin Hart is best known for. Also, this is the first time I have seen him play a character as maniacal as Snowball. As a matter of fact, I have never seen him play a bad guy. So I am excited to see how well the Illumination team mixes Mr. Hart's voice with the actions of this adorable villain.
I hope this movie does well in the box office. It has the potential to be a very memorable, family film. I look forward to watching it when it hits theaters on July 8th 2016. If you love comedy and your kids (or nephews and nieces) love 3-D animations, I suggest you take the afternoon off and take them to watch this animated movie. Until then, I hope you all enjoy the trailer.
