More Than A Cartoon (Viewer Discretion Advised)

By the end of the 1990s, cartoons transcending the restrictive, child-friendly nature that many adults had accepted as the norm, had made it to the television screens of many Western households.
By the early 2000s, series like The Simpsons and South Park brought to the foray animated features that portrayed political and social quagmires uncommon to the cartoons of their time. However, unlike countries like Japan that have accepted animation as a launching platform for opinionated expression, the United States and many other Western countries have been slow in emerging out of the child protection bubble. That said, I believe we are nearing a crucial shift where animation is once again expanding in content and reach.

Last week, Sony Pictures Entertainment released a Red Band trailer for Sausage Party. Sausage Party is a comedy of a cult-like nature. The plot is centered around a bag of enthusiastic, talking groceries. After being purchased from a grocery store, these groceries exchange fantasies of splendor and a better life beyond the sliding doors. However, they quickly realize that their sacrificial roles in life are not as wonderful and painless as they have been told to believe. There are obvious references to religious fanaticism, drug use and a slew of other political issues that make this movie more than a cartoon. So it should not be treated as another form of child entertainment. This is not a Veggie Tales movie.

Sausage Party is coming to U.S theaters on August, 12, 2016. If you are a fan of Family Guy-esque humor or dark comedy, I highly advise that you make room on your calendar to go see this movie. Also, if you are a fan of works involving Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill and Danny McBride, you should definitely see this movie when it comes to a theater near you. You are sure to bust a gut.
