Whose paradise is this?
When I first heard the song "Paradise" by Benny Benassi featuring Chris Brown, I said to myself, "Yes! This song speaks to me!" The music was so free-spirited, so uplifting. I felt like a person living in paradise. No barriers, no prejudice, no cares.
However, when I saw the music video I was a little disappointing. Not because of the venue where the video was shot. The beach was a great choice of venue. It helped drive the point of peace and infinite possibility, being the place where the sea touches the sky.
I was not disappointed with Chris Brown. Mr. Brown's performance was spotless. His dance moves were fluid. His eye contact was on point. Not once did he give the impression of a person restrained. He seemed completely comfortable and totally free-spirited.
What disappointed me were the extras. The models and the party girls were beautiful. They were toned, young and ready to have fun. However, they only made up a small slice of the female spectrum. The extras lacked diversity not just in the ethnicity department but in features too. Women in paradise, at least my paradise, are not just light-skinned, long, straight-haired women with pointed noses and blue eyes. They are also dark-skinned and brown-skinned women with short hair, curly hair and no hair, black hair, brown hair, red hair and blond hair, button-noses and flat-noses, tattoos and no tattoos, brown-eyes, blue-eyes and green-eyes.
In addition, the paradise depicted in this video consisted mostly of women. Chris Brown and Benny Benassi were the only men there? So what happened to the other men? Were they cast off into some isolated, alternate paradise?
In that case, whose paradise is this video appealing to? Mr. Brown's? Mr. Benassi's? Obviously, not mine. However, I am only one person. Maybe you guys feel differently. Check out the music video to Benny Benassi's "Paradise", featuring Chris Brown, and tell me what you think.
