The “El Mariachi” music video by Bassjackers and Jay Hardway is one of the funniest, animated music videos I have seen in ages. It masterfully highlights the different stages of stardom and many of the stresses and pitfalls that come with it. The mariachi band players are a lovable lot who many artists and viewers can relate to. They are artists who use their gifts to bring smiles to the faces of hopeful onlookers, only to be noticed by an aspiring manager who leads them on a crazy journey with the promise of money and fame. Like any fame-driven journey, it does not take long for them to become another product of contractual obligations. Forced to take on mediocre endorsements and adopt a more flamboyant image, they become unrecognizable to everyone, including themselves.

The music is catchy and works so well with the animation that it seems to control the action of the characters. I believe this music video is great for all ages. It is especially suitable for individuals who aspire to become household names in the music industry. It carries a message that should serve as a cornerstone of all musicians---as long as your love for music is strong, you can survive without fame.
